Employment Ontario Programs & Services

As an Employment Ontario Service Provider, Northwest Employment Works offers free job search and hiring supports to job seekers and employers in our community (Thunder Bay, Marathon, Terrace Bay, Schreiber, Pays Plat , Dryden & Sioux Lookout).

Community Employment Resource Centre
Employment Resource Centres are open to the public for;
- use computers, printer , fax machine and phone for job search purposes
- access resources on community supports (housing, food banks, health centres, etc.)
- resources available such as virtual and in person workshops ( Better Jobs Ontario, Resume Development, Apprenticeship)
- have access to employer on site visits and info about jobs that are not posted publicly
Job Search
For individuals who require more support with job searching may be eligible for a one to one employment counselling session. To be eligible the individual must;
- must not be in full time school or work
- be a citizen or a permanent resident in Canada
- if working, must be less than 20 hours per week
- exceptions can be made in some cases for individuals (underemployed, other circumstances)
With this level of service, the Job Search Advisor can provide support with;
- career exploration
- resume/cover letter
- interview prep
- online application process
- training options
- educational options
Job Development
This program assists individuals by having the Job Development Team reach out directly to employers on their behalf. This level of service is for those with barriers to employment that are unable to effectively market themselves to employers. Through this program a wage incentive is available to offset the initial costs of hiring/training a new employee.
Better Jobs Ontario (BJO)
The goal of this program is to better help those who may face challenges finding a stable job.
If individuals have been unemployed for six months or longer, and are part of a low-income household, they may benefit from the following;
Better Jobs Ontario provides eligible applicants with:
- skills training for in-demand jobs
- financial support
Individuals can apply for up to $28,000 for costs, including:
- tuition
- books
- other instructional costs, including student fees, supplies and electronic devices
- transportation
- basic living allowance (up to $500 per week)
Additional funding may be available for:
- childcare
- disability-related supports
- living away from home
- Literacy and Basic Skills (LBS) and/or language training
Training
The program focuses on training programs that take 52 weeks or less to complete, including micro-credential programs. Individuals looking to learn more and see if they are eligible are encouraged to reach out to their local EO office. Northwest Works offers a monthly workshop on BJO for those interested in learning more about the program along with a monthly workshop/event calendar. To get your name on the list please contact:
